Topic: Marsh frog - impacting upon common frog??
In my garden pond I have five Marsh frogs and two Edible frogs, I have never seen them feeding underwater,and there are many, many Common frog taddies in there,there's a lot of predation of the Common taddies by Dragonfly larvae and when they turn into froglets I would'nt be surprised to see the Marshies snap up a few.Although having said that the largest Marsh was quite capable of eating the smaller Marshies, but did'nt !. I have only ever seen them eating insects (including wasps !). In the summer months I also keep different tropical fish in the pond,and ALL of them spawn and thrive !(this is in East Sussex),Dragonfly and Damselflies do snaffle some of the fish but the number offry outnumber thoses predated. The frogs started calling about a month ago. "I'm not saying there shoud be capital punishment for stupidity,but why don't we take the safety labels off and let the issue resolve itself ?." |

23;15 hrs,Just crept down to my pond as I could hear males calling,half a dozen or so there,rescued female from road last night,water and air temp only about 4-5 c.If they start spawning soon it's earlier than last year,even though it's colder !. "I'm not saying there shoud be capital punishment for stupidity,but why don't we take the safety labels off and let the issue resolve itself ?." |

Today (East Sussex) lots of activity in pond,but no spawn yet,should be in a day or two.Not spawned this late for many years,I guess even the frogs hav'nt been conned by AGW,sorry,climate change !.

Quite a lot down here in the SouthEast,they don't decimate the amphibian populations in the rest of Europe so I can't see why they would here,plenty of Marshies/Edibles for them here though.They do seem to favour estuaries here,not many frogs there. First spawn today,there must be 30 to 40 frogs in my small pond,latest I've known them spawn since I was a kid back in the ...err...early 70's !. "I'm not saying there shoud be capital punishment for stupidity,but why don't we take the safety labels off and let the issue resolve itself ?." |

Spawned over this weekend,four weeks later than last year.Female Palmate newts are already eating individual eggs,males don't only females,getting nutrition for their own eggs perhaps ?. Two weeks ago all I cold see were big fat taddies with back legs,one week ago froglets everywhere !.Lots of them still hanging around edge of the pond,have to be careful where I walk and a great excuse not to mow !. Watching the two Marshies and one Edible I have in my (small) pond,they eat mainly flying insects.Have lots of dragon and damselfly nymphs so the frogs don't impact on them too much.And this last week lots of common froglets around the edge of the pond that don't seem to be predatded on!. They also come out of the pond and hunt around at night. And now a maybe contaversial bit,I swear these frogs recognise me,I can kneel down 1ft away from them and they don't react,carry on feeding,sitting in the sun etc.If my youngest boy gets anywhere near them,they jump strait under the water,the reason?,he tries to catch them I don't. "I'm not saying there shoud be capital punishment for stupidity,but why don't we take the safety labels off and let the issue resolve itself ?." |
