Posted: 25 Apr 2007 Topic: High concentration of grass snakes

Most of the grass snakes were in individual spots, basking apart from three which were together.  The only racing around they did was when I tried to photograph them.  I think I need to go a bit earlier in the day before they warm up.  Lakeside is a good spot.  Normally I expect to see three or four grass snakes at a time there which I thought was a good number until Saturday.  There's also sometimes an adder or two in the heather but I haven't seen one at this site so far this year. I will make an effort during the year to keep an eye on the numbers there to see if this was just due to mating.

Hi All, thanks for the warm welcome.  Have been watching reptiles whilst out watching birds and dragonflies for a few years but have only been making a real effort in the last couple of years and trying to build up a collection of reptile piccies.  Reading the posts on this forum is very informative and makes me realise how little I know about our native reptiles. I didn't even know that you could tell individual adders apart by their markings!

Hi All

Yesterday at Lakeside nature reserve near Ash in Surrey I counted 13 grass snakes including one individual of approx 4 1/2 feet in a small patch of heather about 20m x 15m bordered on three sides by water.  Is this a large number or is this not unusual in suitable habitat?

Cheers

Hi All

I saw my first baby adder ever today at Bramshill Plantation in Hampshire.  It was about six inches long and barely thicker than a pencil. Brilliant!

Cheers

Hi James

No pics of the baby unfortunately, it went off into the undergrowth as soon as it saw us although I do have pics of adult adders taken over the years.

Hi Jon

The only count I have so far from Bramshill this year apart from the baby yesterday is the following:

4 males and 1 female adder at Bramshill on 6th April.  We arrived too late yesterday for the normal sun traps we check to be occupied. They only seem to make use of these spots before about 10am. Saw 1 slow worm at Bramshill yesterday also.

Cheers

Posted: 04 Jun 2007 Topic: Grass Snake versus Weasel

Hi All

At Pulborough Brooks RPSB in Sussex yesterday my partner and I were walking along a track when we heard a rustle off to our right.  A three foot grass snake shot across the path in front of us and down the bank with a weasel in hot pursuit. I thought that weasels ate small mammals ie voles.  To cut a long story short the snake got away but the weasel drew an admiring crowd as it carried on hunting.

Has anyone else heard of grassies being hunted by something so small?

Cheers

Posted: 21 Mar 2010 Topic: First toads

Hi All

I saw my first toads of the year today at a breeding pond near Fleet in Hampshire. There were eighty five toads viewable at the surface of the water with probably a good deal more underwater.  This date is three weeks later than the first ones at this site last year.

Hi All

Can anyone confirm that this is a Common Lizard. I know that they are variable but it looks a bit odd.

Thanks
