Do slow worms in captivity need a heating mat?

Topic: Slow worms in captivity. HELP!
My children have found some slow worms and we`d like to study them for a while. I know they are protected, and have read up on the laws. I dont intend to hurt, kill, or sell them, and would appreiciate some advise on how to keep them healthy. At the moment I have them in a large viv, set up for a skink, which has a heat mat at one end, a basking lamp at the other, with plenty of cooler ares, and places to hide, and burrow. I would like any advise on how and what to feed them. Ive found they like wax worms, earthwors+ slugs, but Id like to know if dog food is a possibility, as its readily available in our house! Am I right in doing this? I do not wish to keep these animals for any great length of time, and will not attempt to keep them, if I find I cannot care for them adeqately. Hi Mike, Im origionaly (carnt speel!) from High Wycombe, but now live in West Wales, been here for nearly 12 yrs now. When I was a kid growing up in Wooburn Green, there were adders, common toads, plenty of common frogs, lots of slow worms, and a sprinkling of common lizards! My grandparent`s still live in Beaconsfeild, and we await my grandad`s proud pics of his resident grass snake, and frogs, every year, in the spring, with bated breath! We seem to have less toads here in Wales, but as we live near to a river, reedbed, and coast, we get tons of froggies! We do see the odd lizard, but we seem to have plenty of slow worms here. Nice to chat! Its always better to ask for forgiveness after, than ask for permission before!!! |

Thank you all so much for your help and advise! I will try to keep them fed well, and as soon as I have taken some notes and observations, they will all be returned to where I found them, hopefully none the worse for their experiment! Great tips on how 2 provide wild-like viv scenes, cheers Jon! Its always better to ask for forgiveness after, than ask for permission before!!! |

Topic: Are sloworms related to skinks?
I have been keeping some sloworms for my children to study, during this time we have found that they seem very similar to my pink tongued skink. I have heard that sloworms are actualy legless lizards, and on some individuals, we can see the remainder of leg buds. I was also wondering if anyone keeps glass lizards, which I believe to be related too. Its always better to ask for forgiveness after, than ask for permission before!!! |
