although its probably wrong i often find that smooth and palmates can betold apart by the lines of spots on the backs.smooths have two lines running down it with spots that are forming a near perfect line. whereas palmates have two lines with spots that don't touch and are all over the place.

hey all,

i live in frimley-near ash. and this year -well over the last few years i have noticed that the numbers of toads has dramatically dropped. this year i have only seen a few tadpoles. i don't know if this is due to management being carried out at the wrong time of year or if their is as national decline. anyway back to the subject.i built a pond although very smll it already has many common toads in under ayear.

very pleased.

Posted: 05 Aug 2004 Topic: TINS

at a site that i'm helping with in camberley i know someone is studying tin sizes. as there are the usual medium tins and large tins and also tiny tins which are really just strips. these do seem to ony attract neos where we found around alot of neo slow worms. can't have been that old as theywere still a white and grey colour. but its interesting to see that there were loads under each one. yet we only found a one slow worm under around 4 large sheets and a couple under the medium sheets.

forgot to say the tins were around 7" X 16" i think!

i've a few captive common lizards that were used for a visitor centre display. they've shed complete skins minus the head. the intricacy of the hands is amazing. and its also strange how their colour is so much brighter straight after or during their shedding period.

Posted: 21 May 2004 Topic: surveying grass snakes

hi, i'm currently surveying most reptiles and such at merrist wood college, guilford, as i am a student. any way we have a few tins next a small water pit ( about 10m X 10M). i would have thought that there would have been grass snakes here, but to my urprise i have only found 2 adders and a slow worm on a different time.

so does anyone know of any secure ways of seeing grass snakes or any survey techniques . would it be better to use roofing felt instead of tins?

anything is of help.

i was surprised when a friend of mine ,who works for GPM & EPR, told me how much refugia needs to be placed out. what is the best refugia to put out tin or roofing felt? or something completely different?

i went out today with my surveyor friend, at about 12. although it is the hottest part of the day i found an adult female adder , i sub adult male grass snake and 1 huge grass snake female all under tin.

very pleased.

my friend has advised me about the best places to place tins. i found another 4 tins, 1 very large egg laying site and what looked like a very large old hibernaculum. there seemed to be many natural basking sites over it .

is it advisable to cover these with tins like my friend advised? or is it best to just leave this well alone and allow for natural basking.

what do you all think?  i will post photos soon. mark

hello all.

i think i have read about this before, but i can't remember. i have a grass snake that i keep finding under one of my tins, but it has blue eyes. they are pale blue and look like they completely cover the complete eye. it's  a sub adult i believe, male.

any thoughts on what is wrong with it?

i have only seen it this week, but everyday so far this week. today i found it again and it only had a slight bit of blue left the rest was clear. so i take it from this that the snake was just shedding it's skin.

but it did look rather odd and cool.

Posted: 01 Jun 2004 Topic: lack of spawn and tadpoles?

has anybody noticed a lack of spawn from especially frogs but also maybe from toads. i have seen hardly any spawn or tadpoles this year. although my main pond has been badly managed the other ponds have been managed correctly and had a large population last year but i have seen very few this year.

has any one else noticed this or know why this has happened?

hello,

i've been surveying a site at merrist wood college for around a month now, but i've seen up to now no juvenilles of any species ( or what i know of). until about two days ago. yesterday and today inclusive i have now seen around 16 grass snakes, 5 juvenile slow worms and 4 juv. adders.

now the question i ask are these from last year or really early newbies?

all species were VERY small with the grass snakes being about as thin as big as a pencil!!

although it's good to tell what age they are, why do you think they have suddenly started appearing now?

is it because they hibernate for much longer or...?

hey alan,

although this is a very late comment within this disscusion, i was wondering what the outcome was?? i live in frimley (near ash) and can easily understand about the amount of plonkers that would be hanging around up there.

i'm only 18 and go to merrist wood college in guildford, which is where i do a lot of my reptile stuff. and the amount of times that i have turned up to my tins and found some golfers playing with adders is unbelieveable. how they have managed to find my tins escapes me they are in the furthest  away place from the college. so how ????

but any way what happened in the end?

one of them look a bit squashed, well flat and the were also acting strangely to what i've seen thenm like before. they were hardly moving and were generally kind of sleepy.  where i work at lightwater country park, the ranger was saying mybe tiny inverts such as springtails? but i have now released them back at merrist wood along with the young uns.

and yep there are adders at merrist wood.

i have seen a few like this, but not with that much. normally theres just a small bit in the middle that i thought was from say having something on them and making a mark. but from the look of yours it is rather different. strange ay.
