Topic: Wall Lizards at Ventnor
On Saturday last we made a trip to the In all about 30 adults were seen in the space of about half to three-quarter of an hour. It would appear that this colony is thriving. Chris |

I am unaware of any colonies of Euscorpius being recorded from Swanage? There are periodic records of them being found in various ports, Southampton was once suppose to house a colony but as far as I am aware they have not been seen in recent years. Very interesting to here if anyone else has any knowledge of records from Swanage! Chris |

Hi Alex, I have a portable UV light which you could borrow if you would like! I only live in Southampton, which is not a million miles away. I am currently on the government non-native species working group, mostly dealing with reptiles and amphibians. However, I also work on arachnids, been involved with Latrodectus issue for the passed fifteen or so years. I am interested in scorpions and how they have become established here in the UK. Whilst there are a number of reports of colonies up and down the country few appear to be self supporting. It would be very interesting to find out more about this population. Chris |

Alex, it would be much easier with a UV lamp, rather than a red light, but the latter is worth a try. I will try and dig out my UV lamp and you are welcomed to use it! I would also suspect the little chaps are not going to be very active in the rain and cold, nice warm dry night would be much better. Mark, I live in Woolston, so very close. DonĘt actually keep many reptiles these days, but if you are into porcupines and possums, then IĘm your man! Also have racoons, skunks, and an array of other crittersą Chris |

Topic: WALL LIZARDS WHOSE FOR OR AGAINST THEM
Is there any credible evidence that introduced wall lizard colonies have an adverse effect on our native species? Chris |

Thanks for all the info, very helpful. I am trying to asses the threats to native species posed by certain non-native species, i.e. is the threat to our native lizards low, medium or high by the occurrence of Podarcis. I have to say that I am a little circumspect that Pm is a threat to our sandies, but some valid issues have been raised by Steve above. Clearly more work needs to be done on this before we can field a more conclusive answer. Chris |

Topic: licenses for european reptiles
Under the Habitats Directive DEFRA introduced the European Protected Species Regulations last year, this means you may need to be licensed if you have wild caught specimens of most European reptiles and amphibians. If the specimens held and captive bred licences are not required. Chris |

Topic: venomous alien found on Anglesey!
Dinodon rufozonatum as previously are predominately from China, not uncommon in trade. Not imported as commonly today, as they were 5/10 years ago. Whilst they are rear fanged they are not injurious. In the wild they are often amphibian feeders, in captivity usually convert to mammalian diet. I would think the likelihood this species could survive UK winters exceptionally remote. Chris |
