You could try asking for help on http://talkto.thefrog.org there are some fairly knowledgable people on there, so someone might have some advice. |

Topic: common lizard digging.
I observed a male common lizard, about 10 cm long, digging into the soil in my front garden yesterday. I was wandering if anyone knew why it was doing this? It was about 1pm & the garden is west facing, therefore it was reasonable hot. Could it have been digging to try and cool down? |

Topic: basking & UT
just rescued a sub-adult male, approx 20-25 cm, from a neighbours cat on the edge of a protected field in North Somerset. Kept him for half an hour, to make certain the cat had gone, before re-releasing him in the hedgerow where the cat had dragged him from. Appeared fine & quickly moved off to find cover under some fallen branches. will try & post a picture when I get the film developed. |

Topic: An interesting afternoon.
I spent the afternoon watching the juvinile common lizards, in the field oposite my house. It was interesting observing them chasing down small flies, they seemed to have quite an appetite! Also saw an adult female basking and a young slow worm under a stone.

Went to studland today and dispite arriving rather late, 1.30 pm, saw my first smooth snake and sand lizard. I managed to get a good view of 2 smooth snakes and a juvinile sand lizard. Unfortunately I didn't see any adders but I'm off to the mendips on Thursday, hopefully I'll do better there. |

Topic: british toads
hi, what type of toad? what temp is it being kept at? seeing as this is a wildlife site you might want to post your question on another forum. You could try: http://talkto.thefrog.org Having just read the title of your post I assume it's a common toad? if so AJfr0ggy would be the person to ask, as I think I'm correct in thinking that he has raised them in captivity. He posts on here and "talk to the frog". |

I'm glad that someone has answered. This is basically what I wanted to say but lacked the confidence to do so. I would also like to add that if you are using crickets as feeders then any that are uneaten should be removed from the viv or some food placed in there for the crickets. A hungry cricket can be a vicious b*****d. |

Topic: life expectancy?
Just out of interest does anyone know the average life expectancy for the common lizard? I've tried searching for this info without any success. |

many thanks for that info. I expect all the cats around my area reduce their life expectancy quite considerable. Admittedly it's usually slow worms I have to rescue from the neighbours cats. |

Topic: life expectancy?
The average life expectancy for a West Country population was around 4-5 years
I take it that's a mean average? As females don't mature until 3 years, I would of thought that the population wouldn't be viable if very few lived beyond 4 or 5.
