Topic: Smallest one so far!
Hi, found this little beauty at the weekend, only a few inches long (so I guess a neonate). Is this not a bit early in the year to find such small adders, I always thought they gave birth in late August? I also saw a pair mating at the same location... so I'm a bit confused! Unless a one-off pair decided to breed in the middle of winter?! Any ideas anyone? Cheers. Robbie |

Topic: More Mendip adders
Cheers Kev, I just started a new job so only going to be able to visit the site at weekends unfortunately. Thanks for putting together the disc though, let me know if you are ever going to be up there at a weekend and I'll pick it up. How's your research coming along? Cheers! Robbie |

A few shots from the Mendips at the weekend. This is one of the strangest coloured adders I have seen, very red zig-zags and spots on a greeny-grey body! Robbie |

Topic: Displaying shed skins!?
Hi all, Found a couple of shed skins a few weeks ago and tried to think how best to display them. Came up with this... Putting them onto a canvas! Not too hard, just soak the skin then cut down the middle of the ventral scales and it opens up pretty easily (although spreading it out is a bit fiddley - easier if you do it all underwater!). Let it dry, bit of paint around the edges and a coat of varnish - voila! Just in case anyone has a load of skins they don't know what to do with! Cheers. Robbie |

Topic: 1st mating ball of 2008
Nice pose Tim! Don't really want to get involved in the 'great grass snake dispute' as it is really nothing to do with me, but I do know for a fact that the grass snake photos in a previous post that Robert V seems to think are fakes/captives are in fact very real and completely wild. I have visited the same location in the Mendips on numerous occasions and know exactly where these pics were taken. I have witnessed at least 5 grass snakes in a mating ball on three seperate occasions at this spot with my own eyes - and you can get surprisingly close to them if you move slowly. Robbie |

Even more under the same tin! 15 all together at once! Anyone else found anything like this? Usually slow worms are found singly or in groups of around 2-3 according to past population studies, and I found groups of up to 5 when I was studying them a few years ago. But 15 in the same place at the same time!!! That's quite alot isn't it? Robbie |

Topic: Slow worm problem
I have a bit of a dilema. I have just begun doing some work for Mendip Council involving cutting grass around town. There is one particular area, a back alley with plenty of long grass, which is supposed to be strimmed every couple of weeks and several times I have found slow worms here - and almost chopped them to pieces! Infact my collegue today decapitated one of last years hatchlings and felt terrible about it all day. Not good! I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what the laws are about what happens if you find slow worms, (and it is obviously a healthy, breeding population), in areas where work is being done? Do they need to be captured and relocated or should the area be left 'unstrimmed'. Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers Robbie |

Head shot of a very "friendly" adder I found under a tin. She didn't move when I lifted it... or when I slowly moved the lens to within 2cm of her nose! Robbie |

Hi Tony, another photo of the unusual green/grey and orange individual I found at Charterhouse. Have been keeping an eye out for her to get some full body shots but have not seen her again since! Robbie |

Thanks, Not too big, maybe just over a foot and a half. Out of interest, how do you sex a grass snake from a head shot? I'm not really up to scratch on my grass snakes! Cheers. Robbie |

Topic: Relocation question
Hi, I have recently been contacted by a Parish Counsellor in Rodney Stoke who wanted some advice because they have a colony of adders on the village play area and were wondering if they could be relocated. Does anyone know much about relocating adders? I have no idea how many she is talking about and obviously if they were to be moved it would have to be done properly. Any suggestions would be great. Cheers, Robbie Robbie |
