Topic: Management and Population Extinctions
Hi, I work for Neath and Port Talbot CBC (Biodiversity Unit), South Wales as a community wildlife project officer and have recently become hooked on reptiles thanks to Peter Hill. I've just read the posts and the same things are happening here in sunny (I wish) Neath Port Talbot. I'm now taking every opportunity to tell the volunteers i work with about what i'm learning as i'm ashamed to say i've been walking around with my eyes shut! I'm starting to learn that there is a need for the Vale to be made aware of how important these amazing creatures are. I'm holding a series of training for volunteers and herps is one that will be held in the spring. Training for planners and those in the parks services is also going to be provided in the hope that we will see less destruction of important habitat and will be partnering up with ARG to do this! I've still got so much to learn and i'm enjoying going out on sites that i work on and now seeing what reptiles are present. sadly though i'm also seeing there habitat destroyed on sites by bad management and ignorance! We are lucky to have a wildlife crime officer here but he's got his work cut out! I agree that a prosecution is what is needed to get these guys to sit up and think about what damage they are doing! Any advice and links to other sites will be welcome

Topic: Grass snake habitat destroyed....
Speaking from the 'new recruits' perspective....... the recently detroyed habitat is where i spotted my first grass snake, so to see the destruction of this site made me pretty angry to say the least! (should hav heard me on the phone when i was listening to the message pete had left........*******! *******! have done it again!) I'm really greatful for Pete being in my face as he call's it and really hope that with his and other like minded people's help we can increase reptile awareness. Hopefully the "mini conference" will help also. I hate being a council bod but if i can help in stopping ignorance from destroying important reptile habitat then its worth it. Must admit i'm not very good at being diplomatic though when i'm pissed off! cheers Pete for opening my eyes this is something i should have been doing anyhow! Chaela |

Topic: A simple question!
The list seems like it could go on. As regards the issue of protection, if Grass Snakes and Adders had the same protection as GCN then a lot more planning applications that come into the council could be refused and this would also give us a stronger case as regards management of Country Parks etc. This is an issue that was only discussed today and it was agreed that translocation seems to be used as the only option but its finding suitable sites. I was told that if Grass snakes/Adders had the same protection as GCN then the outcome for this particular site we were discussing today would be completely different and the same goes for similar sites in this area. sorry if i've moved away slightly from your original question Rob
