Topic: Juvenile adder diet
Very small adders do indeed eat full grown viviparous lizards. The adder in the picture regurgitated the lizard after I captured it during a relocation. I didn't measure them both exactly, but the lizard might just win by a nose. Felt quite bad about it as that lizard must have taken some swallowing... |

Don't live in West Glamorgan, but used to study at Swansea. I did my MSc project on great crested newts and found a nice metapopulation in the Rhossilli area on Gower. Would be interested to know how it's doing if you have anyone in that area. |
"A survey of Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) and Palmate Newt (T.helveticus) populations at Pilton, Gower, South Wales and an evaluation of their habitat" That's the one! There's some management recommendations in the back so maybe something for some practical tasks? |

Topic: Invert surveys before translocations
Some consultants (and I'm not talking independent consultants) have attempted to get company policy changed such that clients have to opt out of allowing their data to be used for recording purposes. The universal response has been that it is seen as a 'business risk' that may make their bid less attractive.
I work for a medium sized specialist ecology company. We have just rewritten our terms and conditions to allow us to release data once it is in the public domain, unless it is specifically requested by the client that we do not. Another factor for consultants is the amount of time it takes to process all the data into a format the record centres are happy with (and finding out what format they want it in in the first place has also proved a bit difficult). I have collected all the herp data from for my company for the county we are most active in, for the past few years and will submit it over the winter. This took me 2-3 days to sort out, time when I am not working on the countless other things I need to be doing, and time when I am not earning my boss money!!! One other thing to mention, is that the majority of our data is included in reports that are read by local authority ecologists in relation to planning applications - many of whom sit in the same offices as their colleagues on local record centres. Surely there could be another way of getting hold of this data here? |
