Posted: 08 Jul 2009 Topic: Natterjacks in Cumbria

Just an update on the site that I'm currently monitoring on the Cumbrian coast - so far we have had several strings develop and emerge. Since this is my first year of monitoring I'm very happy with the state of events.

Posted: 23 Sep 2008 Topic: New to Herps

Hi everyone,
I'm new to herpetology and wondering what I might see in my home area (Silloth-on-Solway) in Cumbria. I would also like to help out with field studies and related tasks. Any advice would be most welcome

My wife bought some eco-friendly product that was made from egg shells that deterred the slugs/snails from crossing and eating our plants

If its not fur nor feather then the RSPCA have not got a clue. I used to respect them but since I've found out how useless they really are in relation to herps

From a personal point of view - I have no experience of snakes at all, so I'll just look and photo them until such a time when I've been shown the correct way of handling the animal.

Posted: 26 Oct 2008 Topic: Use Google Earth to Map Locations

Hi all, whilst surfing the web the other day I came across this from a site in the US. They are using Google Earth to pinpoint locations and send attachments to each other - do you think this could be done here?

For the info please read the following: -

(sorry can't get the hyperlink to work)

Pardon my ignorance - but is there any guidelines or legislation on the translocation of animals, if so have any been broken, and can the culprits be held to account?

I should be OK without the snorkelling gear, as I swim like a brick to start with and I have an RNLI station based in my town

Posted: 30 Nov 2008 Topic: Dog walking affect on habitat

I think a lot has to do with the attitude and/or ignorance of the dog walker. Some owners may not realise the harm that Fido can do if left to its own devices, and unfortunately some will not care. Maybe if sign were places on known walking tracks advising of the disturbance that fido can do if not on a lead. I'm sure this is not the first time this topic has come about - and that's why I say more education of Joe Public is needed.

Posted: 01 Dec 2008 Topic: Should I Break The Ice on My Pond?

I would say that your initial thoughts were correct - the frogs have and will survive; they go into a shut down state at the bottom of the pond or  hibernate under lief litter, they also have a built in anti-freeze in their body. One good thing about the ice breaking is at least the birds can still get a drink (until if freezes again) I have several bird baths at home and frequently melt the ice.

I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable members could explain it better than I have - hope that helps
