JaneW

As an overview, as you are considering making a pond, if you did this sooner rather than later, you could transfer the tadpoles to this new pond which is more suitable than bowls. (They will still need feeding till the pond becomes established)

Redleg is not such an issue as the pond would be newly populated, the fear is that the disease will be spread to existing populations by translocation.

On March 29th Gemma and I returned to the pond, she took the following photograph.

This  shows the final stages of the demise of the pond, only 16 days after the original picture at the top of this page was taken.

A bit late for this occasion, but if you hear of this situation about to happen again, why not approach the school governors and explain to them, or object on the planning application and try and get the support of the local press.

Posted: 30 Apr 2003 Topic: Bringing wildlife back to farmland

Please find below a link to the Farmed Enviroment Company.

Not strictly Reptile and Amphibian but in my view good news regarding conservation in the UK.

It is a three-year research and knowledge transfer initiative, which looks at effective techniques to manage farmland in order to improve biodiversity whilst maintaining farm profitability.

I believe that compared to todays normal crop fields there were:
- 13 times more butterflies
- 38 times more birds
- 3134 bumblebees recorded on habitat plots; only 1 bumblebee recorded on
the crop plot

In total approximately 60,000 invertebrates per hectare were recorded. This
shows the speed of response when farmers reintroduce the appropriate
wildlife habitats on to their farmland.

I am led to believe that Dr Rob McGibbon of the Surrey Heathland project is the man in charge of this project.

Pirbright Parish Council is also involved.

Posted: 26 May 2003 Topic: MervĘs meanderings

Today I had gotten bored working so I decided to take my dog for a walk on the local (10 miles away) heath.

I was pleased to see the heathland is well maintained.

In the pond (half covered by some sort of pond weed) I saw many toad tadpoles shoaling and also some frog tadpoles. They appeared well developed and healthy.

In the pond itself there was some movement (frogs?). I was unable to look closer due to having to prevent dog (part newfoundland) from attemting to swim the pond.

I am inclined to agree with Wolfgang - i.e. not to put up signs which could attract the wrong sort,  but (if possible) put up a fence to keep the dogs out.

Do you have any more information on the proposed Judicial Review eg who has applied for the review and on what grounds?
