Sorry if i've put this in the wrong place but my daughter found this one in our garden this evening, released him/her back to exactly where it was found immediately after taking these photos Next photo shows it in a 4L ice cream tub to give you an idea of size If you're interested the rest of the photos I took can be found on this link to my website http://www.ruths-reptiles.co.uk/Grass%20snake.htm Ruth |
Ruth, were these photos of the same snake???? The first looks like an adult female and the second looks like a juvenile. Are you sure you didn't catch two by mistake! Robert
Absolutely certain it's the same snake, we originally put it into the blue bucket but didn't think the photo's would come out very well due to the colour so transferred him/her into the ice-cream tub, took a few more photos and then released it. Spotted this one in our pond on 03 April 05, it's much bigger than the one we found in our garden in August 04 Ruth |
Have you got frogs/toads in your pond?
Yep, we have frogs (not many though), this one was resting very near to the grass snake, not sure if it would have been too large for the snake or not. In fact it was only due to the fact that the snake had a frog by its leg that drew my husbands attention to the pond, BTW, that particular frog got away We very much hope to have see more sightings of it and perhaps see a few youngsters later in the year. LOL, as for the carp comment, let's just say, there's plenty of choice in the pond!!! Ruth Edited to post photo |

Topic: Just seen two slow-worms
I was very pleased when I found two slow-worms in our garden, i've never seen any before and have been looking ever since we move here in June last year as the previous occupants did say we had slow-worms living in the garden
Last photo is not very good but it is of the juvenile Ruth |

Thanks for the comments Must say, i'm still on quite a high at witnessing the snake having lunch. I took those photo's over a couple of hours, but missed what would have been the most awsome photo of the lot, see the 7th photo down, well, when I went back down to the pond I spotted another grass snake starting to feed on the head end, gutted that when I turned on the camera the "wirring" sound scared it off Mind you, in some ways i'm kind of glad it did as I guess that either or both of the grassies may have ended up dead if they had both continued to feed on the one fish!
The million dollar question? Did he/she finish the fish? Judging by the buldge next morning, then yes.
bet it took ages should have started at the head end not that im an expert in eating raw fish lol
Yea, it should have started head end first, still if it had I bet I wouldn't have been able to get as many photos.
My one concern is about the netting on the pond - would there not be a risk of a snake getting entangled or stuck in that? The mesh size seems just about perfect for trapping a recently-fed grass snake... Wolfgang, you are absolutely right and in fact next morning that is exactly what happened, I did however manage to get it out with no damage to the snake (lots of holes in the net though), however, it has been a lesson learnt and both ends of the net are now no longer on the floor Ruth |

Topic: A youngster - but how young?
Found this little one in the garden this morning, well, in all honesty, credit must go to my 8 year old daughter who actually found it, just wondered if anyone can give a rough guess at approximately how old it's likely to be, sorry pictures not great quality but little one didn't really want to be held so we just took a few photos and then put him/her back where we found it Ruth |
