Topic: The toads are crossing roads in Wales
I went out last night to count Toads in the pond on the local golf course and counted 192, last week it was 133 and this time last year on a wet night there were 230. |

Topic: First Sand Lizard of Year?
Not only is this my first Sand Lizard of the year but the first one I have ever seen We went to Studland bay on Saturday 28th March to look for Sand lizards and despite never having been there and not knowing where to stop and look,we had some success. We first stopped near Wareham and looked at a site there, the first bush we passed a large lizard rushed into before we could identify it,next we saw 2 Adders coiled together in the sun and then after hearing a rustle I turned just in time to see a lizards tail disappearing into a hole. It was getting late by the time we got to Studland and we walked around some heathland for an hour or so just seeing some common lizards and then finding some young newts under a log.We then went to a nearby beach and walking around the dunes soon spotted my first ever Sand Lizard, a female. After taking several photos we headed back to the car and then spotted a male in the undergrowth |

Thank you for the correction, I have no experience of Sand Lizards and so made an easy mistake when presented with an obviously well marked male and a drab brown other specimen. Also they are more chunky than Z.viv and I mistook that for being gravid although it is probably too early for that. |

Topic: Grass Snakes today.
Thanks to Paul for a great day out and looking through pictures from the day I noticed this Grass snake, hope the marks are not related to the swollen eye of the previous snake |

Topic: Crete April 2009
Hi, We then walked over the hill to a bay and saw a few Balkan Green lizards Lacerta trilineata including one of 26 cm We stopped for a meal in town and then headed back to the hotel, there was still some time to spare before collecting Matt from the Airport so we had a look around the walls of the building with a torch for Geckos.Behind some pipes at the rear of the building we found 2 Moorish Geckos Tarentola mauritanica The next day we took Matt to Elounda and found a few Green lizards and Skinks to photograph, this was not difficult as we found the Balkan green lizard to be the most numerous reptile on the island.Next stop was a pond just outside Agios Nicolias where I had previously seen Stripe necked terrapins Mauremys rivulata, the pond was now fenced off and held several very loud geese so we continued on our journey up and up and up to the Lasithi plateau high in the hills. There is a large irrigation lake here and while I have found nothing in the water, the surrounding area is good for reptiles and amphibians. At the overflow of the lake we found a pair of Green toads Pseudepidalia viridis in amplexus and a pair of Tree frogs Hyla arborea
Behind this pump house was a small quarry where I soon spotted a few wall lizards, the object of todays trip
There are many Tree frogs here and even during the day you can here many of them calling and it was great to sit on a bench in the sunshine having lunch just listening to the Bull frogs and Tree frogs calling. While we had been doing this Matt had seen a Balkan whip snake diasappear into a wall so we knew that we were in a good area.We carried in searching and Mat shouted for assistance,he had seen another Balkan whip snake go into a wall and had pulled a few stones away trying to find it .He thought it was hiding under a large stone so I removed a few smaller ones to get to it and then revealed the snake hiding under a smaller stone.

I may be wrong but I think the UK Green lizards are Lacerta bilineata whereas the Greek ones are Lacerta trilineata, very similar to look at. |

Topic: Sand Lizards greening up nicely
Took a chance with the weather yesterday and drove down to Studland. We saw a few Sand lizards about and what a difference a few weeks has made to their colours. I am disappointed not to have recognised the snakes tail disappearing into the heather though,I will never know if that was my first Smooth snake, a species yet to tick from the list.Whilst on the subject of ticks, I wonder if the ticks that these lizards carry are involved in any reptile disease transmission. We found a Z.viv outside Wareham with a few ticks. |

I had my first doubts when he "found" a deer of some type killed in a swiss landslide, he reached into the carcass and explained how one could eat maggots. They were very clearly mealworms. |

I went back here a week or so ago and saw no lizards at all, it may have been because it was a very hot day but a good search revealed nothing. Plenty of tadpoles in the pond and a few Smooth newts. |

Just came back from a couple of days down at Studland and very pleased to have found all reptile species plus the walls and greens at Boscombe.Almost gave up on the Grass snake but a wrong footing into waist deep mud saw a young grassie added to the list. |

Walls and greens were at Boscombe, all others were at Studland in case of any confusion with my previous post. |

Topic: bizarre..
I had a walk along the canal this summer and although I did not see any snakes, I did see a few hoppers for rat poison over the fence in the zoo grounds. A doped up poisoned rat would make an easy but deadly meal. |
