Topic: Adder bite
Well i suppose it had to happen sometime, at 2.55pm on wed i was recording adders from an industrial area where we think new units are going to be built , myself and two friends were catching the adders , photographing each individual and then letting go, i use tongs to hold the adder near the top end and then tail as well to support the animal. It was a freshly sloughed male that pulled through the tongs and bit me on top of my knuckles. There was hardly any blood and it felt less than a bee sting. I drove to Poole Hospital and was given a steroid injection. after about 45 mins the hand was quite balloon sized. I felt quite well. after two hours the swelling was down to my elbow.At this stage at A and E i was told i must have the antivenom. I was not too keen to have the antivenom as i know i am allergic to horses so i refused. I was admitted to a ward and monitored. My blood pressure raised a little and my heart raced off and on a few times but i think that that was down to anxiety. The next morning my arm had grown to a giant size and my fingers were uncomfortable to use. I was givem morphine for the pain and antihistamine tablets (only 4mg though??) The pain was and still is terrible in my arm . and it is best to keep it elevated. At no time have i felt sick or even unwell, my only symptoms have been the massive swelling in my arm , i will try to post a pic of this later.Today 48 hours later i have been discharged and me and my sorry arm will have to rest until all is well again  jerry |

Hi alan, i think you are right as on a local heath to me i used to know how many melanic adders there were ( note were) there was never any juvenile melanic adders only adults , no subadults either! some snakes were notably going darker but they only ever were completely melanic as adults. i have had a female melanic adder with not a trace of markings on her which gave birth to eleven normaly colored young. I think this happens with age . I wonder if two melanic adders would produce some melanic young though?I have thought the same about melanism and heath fires also. but there are many heaths which are burnt every year in Dorset but these have no melanic adders so i think the gene has to be present .i have seen as many melanic females as males but sadly near me they are not present now! the melanic adders i have seen are definately more alert than normal colored , i think you are right as they are more able to warm up easily.See you soon Alan. jerry |

Hi to all, i have been interested in adders for 25 years, i wondered if anyone had any evidence of how some are melanic, does the melanism take years to develop or are some young born in this way? thanks for any info. Jerry jerry |

Hi, yes the frogs are still breeding, i am in a semi rural setting (bet that doesnt help much) my pond will never sustain all this spawn, never seen so many frogs either!! jerry |

saw 4 male adders today at a local heath even though the temperature was only about 7 degrees quite sunny in the morning though, just an icy wind jerry |

Hi, in June the temperatures for the adder are usually high enough for it to spend little or no time basking, the best time to see it then is when it is an intermittent day , the adder is the first reptile out on cooler days but the first to seek shelter when the temperature gets over 20 degrees, although the pregnant females may still be found and i have seen these basking in the rain,and very high temperatures. hope this helps Jerry jerry |

Hi Tony, is there any need to keep disturbing the same individual , this is a lot of stress for an animal . it may get too stressed and move away from this hibernation site and not be able to get deep enough under cover to sustain these hard frosts we are having. I understand the need to learn more about basking temperatures etc, but how many more times is the same individual going to stand being tampered with before it decides to move away , probabaly to its own demise, regards Jerry Stanley jerry |

HOw can you say "never had a negative reaction", you have already stated you have been bitten on the thumb already this year, this animal obviously felt enough stress to do so, just saying with these hard frosts, doesnt seem a good time to disturb or stress any of our reptiles. jerry |
