I am intrigued at the possible dispersion routes of the water frogs in this area. I first had reports about 4 years ago from the Hedon area. These were Marsh frogs.

I now look forward to receiving any recordings from these or any other UK sites.

The change in weather seems to have encouraged toads to begin their migration in Surrey. Last night we found 30 squashes at a Merstham site and helped 25 across the road.

Temperatures around 9C-10C and light , steady rain. Many frogs also on the move and in amplexus.

We expect the toad migration to gather force tonight as conditions the same, and last year 1200 toads were helped across the road at this site.

Yes, we have a couple of sites that would be suitable in Surrey. Migration recommenced last night as now warm and wet. Expect good migration 25th and 26th (1000+).

Please contact me by phone for details.

I recorded waterfrog calls at Shapwick 5 years ago. Resulting call analyses indicated that this population comprised Edidible frogs. However, this may not be the complete story as I prefer to revisit a site several times in order to ensure that I have recorded all species present...  An Edible frog population rarely survives without the presence of either Pool frogs or Marsh frogs with which they interbreed.

2 years ago I recorded waterfrogs calling at Ham Wall Nature Reserve. These frogs were distinctive from those at Shapwick in that the vocal sacs were unusually dark - even when compared to typical Marsh frogs.

Identification of waterfrog species is never certain by morphology alone but use of leg length can be a useful guide. Diagrams may vary slightly due to the enormous variations within a population and should only be used for adult frogs. The following pictures may be of help.

Marsh frog

Pool frog

Edible frog

Hi

A Wall Lizard colony has been present at the old Xenepus site in Nutfield, Surrey for decades.... and was still there a couple of years ago.

Perhaps another threat to amphibian habitats to be considered is the management of water supply -

ground water abstraction and lowering of water table can certainly result in ponds drying out.

Tonight I saw a male GCN in my garden pond... the first time I've seen one before Christmas. Very mild temperatures for the last week with a minimum of 11C may have influenced this.

Yes, the season has started in my Surrey garden pond too with both palmate and smooth newts seen as soon as the 8cms of ice had melted.

A fascinating subject. Here is a bright yellow female found locally in Horley
