Posted: 11 Jun 2005 Topic: HELP - info on alien colonies sought

I hope someone can help me with this info. I'm keen to learn of any accessible self-supporting colonies of alien reptiles and amphibians in the UK. I'm planning to look for green lizards on the Bournemouth Cliffs next week (are they easy to find? is there a specific location?) and am also keen to see any midwife toad colonies around. I've already come across countless marsh frogs and (presumably non-breeding) red-eared sliders, seen wall lizards down in Dorset and stumbled upon a colony of edible frogs near my old work place in London (didn't try to catch any so presumably some could have been pool frogs?). I've also heard there's a site in Surrey which holds Alpine & Italian crested newts along with pool frogs, though it appears catching and re-releasing such beasties is actually illegal.

Despite the fact that I graduated in zoology (at Bangor University -well represented on this forum it seems!), this is purely for personal interest only. I've spent time sketching and photographing native herptiles and am now interested in searching out some of the aliens at large, so please let me know if anyone has recent info with site directions. Oh, and they would have to be more easily seen than Aescuplian snakes in North Wales!

I spent about 5 hours looking for these divided between 2 trips. I saw one on the 2nd trip (August last yr) - they are very difficult to find, unlike the wall lizards there. Photo is a bit rubbish I'm afraid but it will prepare you for what it's like trying to find them!

I've only just found this thread and after being told about these London snakes last year by someone who went to see the Welsh ones I'd like to check them out. Guess they'll be coming out about now? Does anyone fancy a trip or can they give me directions to the best spot?

I knew about the Welsh ones when i was studying at Bangor in the nineties but thought they would be impossible to find (I read there were 1 or 2 sightings a year). Also, I had my hands full with polecats at the time...

I'm puzzled too as to why the location is kept secret? I could understand it if they were native and disturbance had to be kept to a minimum.

I read recently about a colony of alpine and Italian cested newts at Newdigate in Surrey. Would anyone be interested in going to see these and can anyone clarify the legal implications? I presume that if any of these are caught, they cannot be released (so what should happen to them?). And if there are great crested present too, even disturbance is illegal?

Keen for any further thoughts on this.

James

I'm very interested in going if others are - grateful for a PM ahead of any planned trips.

Anyone know when they are likely to emerge?

I'm for them - what else are you supposed to enjoy when failing to see green lizards at Boscombe? The walls saved the day on my 1st trip!

I'm planning a trip soon for these and I'd be grateful for any tips regarding seeing the snakes. From what I've read they can be on the ground or in the trees/ bushes and the N bank of the canal within the zoo grounds is best. Any time of day? Is mid summer a good time to look and is there any particular method in locating them?

If anyone is going to look outside the grounds and wants an extra pair of eyes PM me and I'll try to join you if I'm available.
