Topic: in oxford/reading area?
anyone have any tips on places in the oxford/reading area to find adders ? and anyone with any tips on times of day etc would be great also many thanks Paul |

Thanks Gemma, I went off to a site I found via google kingwood common today but it was very fruitless i saw nothing at all not even so much as a frog! I think i need to learn where to look aswell as which locations to look in maybe ? If anyone is in the oxfordshire area and goes out spotting do let me know how you get on please I get the impression allthough adders have been seen in kingwood common they are not often seen there so maybe not the best place to start with I will contact the arg group as suggested and maybe they can help me find an adder in the wild ! |

Good to see the forum back i wasnt here long before it went and since its been closed ive been having often daily and mostly weekly encounters with adders slow worms and common lizards and nowhere to share these! now they all appear to be tucked up for winter (i dont think spring can come soon enough) |

ive passed on to the rangers 5 individuals ive seen so far but they dont know how many there are and fear theyre may only be around 10 but im hopeing come spring i can get more shots and help to give them more of an idea |

I use both a 2x and a 1.5x on my canon 100mm macro and have to say the 1.5x is acceptable but the 2x is poor in terms of image quality so dont tend to use it much at all |

ive never seen them eat ants I think its just a case that they thrive in the same conditions ive seen ants eat a slow worm, though i suspect it was allready dead before they did so |

I started to observe and take pictures of native Herps last year having been into photography for a couple of years before that, Most of my pictures prior to late last year were of captive non native reptiles and this helped me to learn many of the basic things about photography before i went out trying to take pictures of native reptiles. I have to date used a 100mm macro lens first I had the sigma 105 then I sold that and went for the canon 100 macro as I didnt liek the hunting and slow AF of the sigma 105, Now i am looking into a 180mm macro and thinking about getting the 180EX DG sigma macro and parting with the 100mm macro mainly because it allows me to be that little bit farther away and still take 1.1 macro shots this will be far better for Common lizards and will not impact much at all on adders infact it may help by not requireing being quite so close to them. I also have a 70-200 canon L which I have a 500d close up filter for which allows me to be even more versitile and is a very very handy setup for narture shots anyway not sure if any of that is of any help but it might be |

nothing as yet im my neck of the woods (southern oxfordshire) but i hope to see somthing soon I did find a slow worm body that had been there some time maybe it persished in the winter? anyway ill let you know when the herps are about around these parts |

excuse me if somone did mention it but I missed it.......... the canon 70-200f4L with a 500d on gives some very good macro results aswell as being more flexible than a dedicated macro lens |

the closet you can get with the 100 is 31cm from the spec but more like 10" in real use for me which is plenty close enough and I find it perfect for when im lifting the hides with one hand to get the whole adder in the shot while nealing close enough to still hold the hide up |

Seen a few the last couple of days @Warberg north of Henley Nothing special but there the first ive seen there this year and not through lack of looking I can tell you Oh and this little Grassy before it bolted off like they allways seem to do for me
