Topic: Macabre, but interesting
I found a dead Af in a similar way a few weeks back, there was puncture wounds halfway down the body, so I assume it was possibly killed by a cat(it is a sub-urban site). One thing thats stands out apart from the teeth in the photo is the eye socket. Skeleton preparation anyone? Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

I'd leave well alone because you could end up doing more harm than good. This could be especially true if the local populations are quite small. If Reptiles and Amphibians don't appear in your garden that often, you should accept it - taking animals/spawn etc from the wild is not the solution. There is not much more anyone else can do for you on here advice wise, bar being showed the site by them. You have enough info and when the time comes is to go out and looking, you never know, you may get a surprise or 2. Steve, One other possible is disease such as 'Red Leg' in amphibians. I'd imagine that the types of threat can vary from the area, such as urban sites etc. Just a couple of thoughts, Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

I work on the railway and last April I was walking up the side of the track and whilst looking at some spring fungi in the lineside hedgerow I noticed a slowworm. I continued my walk and saw a tail of something disappear into the undergrowth. I carried on for another 100 yards and I counted 11 adders. I was in the same area today and whilst not seeing any adders I did see a solitary lizard. This lizard did what has been mentioned previously and disappeared in to a rotting sleeper. That pic was taken in Dorset and I'd agree that Lineside herps are probably well under-recorded. As for the compact camera idea, I do have a Digital SLR so once I've bought what I need for that then a compact maybe a possibility.
