Found this whilst browsing the web:

http://www.gardensupplydirect.co.uk/cnb/shop/gardensupplydir ect?productID=2445&op=catalogue-product_info-null&pr odCategoryID=120

Its a thermometer and hygrometer for 25 quid, don't know if it's good or accurate.

Conditions are still good at the moment - saw all 6 on Purbeck on Saturday, so hopefully the conditions won't change for a while.

P.S. Tony, are you coming over Hants or Dorset way?

Posted: 19 Sep 2007 Topic: Macabre, but interesting

I found a dead Af in a similar way a few weeks back, there was puncture wounds halfway down the body, so I assume it was possibly killed by a cat(it is a sub-urban site).   One thing thats stands out apart from the teeth in the photo is the eye socket.   Skeleton preparation anyone?

I'd leave well alone because you could end up doing more harm than good.   This could be especially true if the local populations are quite small.

If Reptiles and Amphibians don't appear in your garden that often, you should accept it - taking animals/spawn etc from the wild is not the solution.

As for GCN's I think you should take a good look at the law concerning that species.

There is not much more anyone else can do for you on here advice wise, bar being showed the site by them.    You have enough info and when the time comes is to go out and looking, you never know, you may get a surprise or 2.

I got a week off at the beginning of March so it won't take much guessing on what I plan to do!

Posted: 12 Feb 2007 Topic: Threats - peer review

Steve,
One other possible is disease such as 'Red Leg' in amphibians.  I'd imagine that the types of threat can vary from the area, such as urban sites etc.

Just a couple of thoughts, Mark

That site tends to get quite busy, especially at the weekends. I think I'll pop up there in the next half hour, though it may be getting a little on the warm side.

Has the Sigma 150mm macro lens been considered?  I have one myself and its very good in my opinion.   As I'm allowed to post off-topic images, heres a pic of a Robin.

Posted: 15 Mar 2006 Topic: ReptilesonoRailways

I work on the railway and last April I was walking up the side of the track and whilst looking at some spring fungi in the lineside hedgerow I noticed a slowworm.

I continued my walk and saw a tail of something disappear into the undergrowth. I carried on for another 100 yards and I counted 11 adders.   I was in the same area today and whilst not seeing any adders I did see a solitary lizard.    This lizard did what has been mentioned previously and disappeared in to a rotting sleeper.

Heres one of my piccies from last April..

I live in Eastleigh and I'm also interested in taking part in the survey.  I have a camera and GPS should these come in handy.

My e-mail address: area.x1atbtinternet.com  (replace 'at' with @)

That pic was taken in Dorset and I'd agree that Lineside herps are probably well under-recorded.    As for the compact camera idea, I do have a Digital SLR so once I've bought what I need for that then a compact maybe a possibility.   It seems that herps  like the lineside cable troughing- especially if it has a crack/hole big enough to squeeze in to. Cheers for the comments.

Don't the Badgers get Bovine TB of the cattle in the first place then spread it as they move about?

Nice piccies- I have't seen any Adders yet this year.    Though if it stays sunny today, I may pop down to a known site here in Hampshire.

They printed an aerial pic in the Mail of the affected area.   A very devastating scene.    I hope they throw the book at who did it.
