Hi Ljubo, I visited Rhodes (Pefkos and Lindos) in June 2001 and had a great time hunting for herps. Probably the most common species are the Anatolian Rock Lizard (Lacerta anatolica), and the Starred Agama (Laudakia stellio) which you will find pretty much everywhere. I have listed most/all reptiles and amphibians which you may find below:

Bufo viridis, Rana ridibunda, Rana cerigensis, Hyla arboria, Mauremys caspica, Cyrtopodion kotschyi, Laudakia stellio, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Chalcides ocellatus, Mabuya aurata, Lacerta danfordi, Lacerta trilineata, Lacerta oertzeni, Blanus strauchi, Typhlops vermicularis, Coluber jugularis, Coluber najadum, Coluber ravergieri, Elaphe situla, Natrix natrix, Telescopus fallax,

Montivipera xanthina was found on Rhodes but is now thought to be extinct there.

Check out this link to a news article from a South Wales Newspaper - where it mentions that the presence of Adders in a grass verge was amongst the reasons for cutting the habitat back. Unbelievable!

Having recently moved to the Somerset area (Yeovil), i have spent a considerable amount of time scoping out the local herps, and with the exception of A.fragilis have found very little....until when walking out into the back garden i spotted this beauty!

Just goes to show that herps can show up where you least expect them!

Spot the grassie - coming out from a gap under the back doorstep!

A nice macro shot of the head!

A preys eye view!

Hi Tim - not sure if it will use the same place over winter. There hasnt been a grass snake spotted there in the last 7 years as far as i know, but when i released it after photographing it, the snake returned straight back into the hole under the step! Perhaps it is a case of overlooking something that is right under you nose!

James
