Well iam pleased to say a good turnout of froggies have already made there way to my garden pond, (Cardiff South Wales) first noticed about 20 males yesterday, having seen the neighbours cat looking in the pond the last two mornings! one pair in amplex today and i noticed quite a few palmates back in the pond tonight aswell, lets hope they dont spawn until the frosts have passed

Nice !

Not a single frog or toad seen in my garden (Surrey) since Xmas....despite the new pond....yet.

A few terrestrial newts wandering about aimlessly tho.

Frogs are present in my pond, but really active. Three palmates showing when i torched it a couple of nights ago, but most startling was the number of alpines male and female that have turned up really early this year - 17 animals visible !

Not frogs I know, but on the theme of emerging amphibs, toad crossed the road in front of me last night, and one of our members, Sam Lewanewski, reported one just before christmas.

All my Alpine Newts are out and about in their enclosure, but not seen any of the Fire Salamanders yet. Common Frogs are also making there presence felt in my gardens small pools, but no sight of any other amphibians yet although i have no doubt they're up and running...or hopping.

If you haven't already, I'm sure SEWBReC would be interested in this record, http://www.sewbrec.org.uk/recording-form.page,

as would Cardiff Council, biodiversity@cardiff.gov.uk

Hooray! my frogs have eventually turned up ! First two last night, both still resident and aquatic.

Both are 'old friends' :P

4 Frogs in my pond last night (one the night before). Had lots last year and no spawn so I'm not building my hopes up too high. I'm in East Devon.

I saw a few clumps of spawn in Gateshead earlier today- this is the earliest I've ever seen it, by about a week.

Hi Caleb

Do you mean Gateshead in the North east or another Gateshead in the South? I live in Cumbria and have not seen frog spawn yet this year. plenty of Newts about though!

Yes, Gateshead in the NE. This pond is always earlier than anywhere else I visit- I don't expect spawn before mid-march at the sites I visit in rural Co. Durham.

The live frogspawn map at Nature's Calendar shows a couple of records for Cumbria this year. It's absolutely fascinating, by the way- everyone should look at it!

local ponds starting to get active frogwise the past few days (west london).
no spawn as yet though.
checked my garden pond at 830pm today.
8 males sticking their heads out of the shallow edges.
one female who was briefly in amplexus this afternoon but since then keeps on shaking off all male advances.
as a comparison, d-day for spawning locally last year was 23rd feb.
i think we will do well to get any in feb this year.

Hi all ( my first post ) , first spawn in my small garden pond in Bristol city centre on Friday 15 February. Then the frosty nights stopped all activity. Thanks for earlier post advising bubble wrap, kept spawn ok whilst rest of pond froze each night during following week. Frogs resumed activities Thursday 21 Feb. 56 frogs was the highest number counted on surface at any time . Continued spawning up until this afternoon. Getting on for double the amount of spawn we had last year - evicting the fish 2 years ago seems to be working! If I sound chuffed it's because I am.
