Posted: 06 May 2003 The Lizard pic looks like Ophisops elegans if it was also taken at Olympos it is possibly of the subspecies macrodactylus which is supposed to occur in that area. The eyes do not have moveable eyelids giving the common name of Snake eyed Lizard and a strange stare. Where was the picture of the Naked fingered gecko taken Cyrtopodion kotschyi as my Turkish book does not show it living anywhere near the coast. The idea of a set of photographs from different European holiday destinations is a very good one. British Herpetological Society Librarian and member of B.H.S Conservation Committee. Posted: 07 May 2003 Good morning Gemma, David Gemma- Well you know a forum for European species gets my vote David - Hi and thanks for the ID. Both the Snake eyed lizard, and Naked toed Gecko were seen about 20 minutes drive away from olympus at a place called 'Adrasan, or Cavus pronounced Shavush'. And both were right on the coast virtualy. I have seen two of these geckos there. Here's a map showing where found. Both were in the area marked with the orange square infront of the arrow. May I ask, which book is it you've got David? Thanks, Al

Posted: 08 May 2003 I am off to Italy next month to do something with Vipera aspis and V.ursinii, and get some pix for the book. I shall be staying with Luca Luiselli who lives in Rome and I would like to go and have a look at the endemic (subspecies) of ruin lizard that lives and cohabits with feral cats at the Collossium; anybody know anything about it?

Posted: 09 May 2003 Tony, dont know why there should be a subspecies endemic to a part of Rome most of the subspecies are endemic to the islands. Have not heard of anything different. As far as I know the 2 subspecies on mainland Italy are Podarcis sicula campestris the norhern part and Podarcis sicula sicula in the southern part. Rome has P.s.sicula but the best person to ask would be an Italian herpetologist such as Claudia Corti for the most up to date information British Herpetological Society Librarian and member of B.H.S Conservation Committee. Posted: 09 May 2003 Tony, I have been to that part of Rome several times including the Collosseo but I was not into Reptiles and the like then. Some parts of the Collosseo were open to the public but I suspect that you will need some form of permission to get into the off limits areas. There are other areas (ruins) in Rome that are more remote to the public even in the city center, these should be better for viewing Lizards, but for the life of me I can't remember where, I'll have to get my Rome map out. Feral cats were everywhere !. Enjoy!, I am most envious, a beautiful city.
