2 summers ago I was stupid enough to get bitten by a female adder - 2 days in hospital and very ill and stomach cramps you could not believe and vomiting.

Have any of you been bitten other than Tony and I and what were the symtoms and outcome. If you unfortunately you died there's no need to reply.

Didn't die, got clobbered twice as an over exuberant teenager, result, zilch, not an itch, nothing, just bled out of all proportion to the marks. I guess I've had my quota of dry bites and rely on being more careful now... though I'll let you know what the symptoms are next time :0)

About adder bite in general, on average two maybe three people a year are bitten in Purbeck.
With regard to domestic animals, the vets practice in Swanage had 28 cases last year, mostly dogs. The year before a dachsund died in half an hour after being bit on the tummy; but it was a very old dog with problems anyway.

On a different species and continent - a collegue got bitten recently by one of the dwarf vipers, Bitis xeropaga, luckily he is Ok but he documented the event and will forward details on to me, probably first record of a bite from this species, I thought I was doing well with my Proatheris bite! In common with the other dwarf vipers (Bitis) there is no antivenom cover.

Three times very minor from V.Berus , no medical attention was needed.
Once from T.albolabis. No Medical advice sought , Swelling at the site of bite with discolouration . Symptoms started to fade after three days , completely fine after one week .

Cheers,
Alan

My 8 year old got bitten by an adder just this weekend, his slightly older friend thought it wise to suck out the poison which he said he could see as dark yellow fluid from the puncture marks.  One of the fangs has left quite a bruise but after an overnight stay in hospital and some slight stomach pains my son is home and well clutching his bravery certificate and a story to tell!  I think his friend deserves a bravery and quick thinking certificate, and some education maybe !
