Posted: 25 May 2008 I have some questions with regard to the components of adder venom.(Vipera berus) Having trawled the literature it appears to be mainly cytotoxic but with haemorragic effects as well. Also components include both anticoagulants and coagulants, but how these are balanced no one seems to know. It is also stated that necrosis at the site of the bite is rare, but I guess that depends on the 'first aid'. Any input would be helpful, its for the adder book, and I need to get it right, and its not exactly my field of expertise. Thanks 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

Posted: 03 Jun 2008 Tony, there is now a school of thought that the venom of Vipera berus may also contain certain neurotoxic factions. More recent (and more accurate) case studies have revealed symptoms effecting the central nervous system; including sleepiness, disorientation, vertigo etc. Also ocular dysfunction has been observed, in the form of ptosis and blurred vision. I believe the Medical University in Krakow, Poland, is working on isolating the various components of V. berus venom. That might be a good starting point. James. |
