I am looking for local people in Hampshire who could help with monitoring reptiles sites across Hampshire over 2006. I am arranging a few workshops on reptile surveying in the spring 2006 and I would like to establish the Adders in Decline/Make the Adder count survey in Hampshire. I was involved with a reptile survey training day with Lee Brady and Gareth Matthes this September in Surrey and this went really well - my group got the most lizard sightings, but Lee's group did find a neonate grass snake As part of the surveys which have been established in Kent over the last two years it seems that we are no extending the surveys over the rest of the South East Region - there will be surveys in Sussex and Surrey - I have established a transect with Gareth Matthes over a large tract of the North Downs in Dorking - we have found all four species of reptile including a hibernation area for adders - so we will be arranging for a survey workshop there - I hope to help alongside Surrey ARG. So the survey is now going to extend into the South Region - where the Hampshire ARG group - I am a member will hopefully be undertaking surveys at various sites. Thanks for that Steve - Have people sent in counts for the Make the Adder Count Survey in 2005 - now is the time to do this - the project is a pilot for a national recording scheme - which will be called NARRS Which areas of NE Hants do you know steve?

Oi jon, is this adder surveying that happening in hants before or after the adder surveying that you said was going to take place in epping forest and that never happened? R RobV |

Hi Robert The surveying as I understand it did take place - other people organised this within the Forest - I started on the survey in 2004 and I have been back there a few times - I have found that work has be tied more down in Hampshire - and as other people are surveying the Forest I thought I could get more local surveys going down in Hampshire. I suspect that there is around 5 ot 6 people that are regularly surveying Epping - like yourself - I would like to come up on the commencing the 17th after bank hols I could meet you up there if you like - it would be good to ge tyou linked up with the EARG members in the area

Posted: 08 Apr 2006 Jon, Went back out to the site you showed me around. Started at 15:45 this afternoon and I found the grand total of 0 Adders. Perhaps the wind was a bit too cold or I couldn't see them or a combination of both. Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

Posted: 08 Apr 2006 Was a bit windy today... Peter saw one at Frensham this morning, and I saw another 8 at Ash this afternoon, both sites were well shielded from wind though. Plenty of females out at Ash today, so dances are on the cards shortly. We didn't see much out at Frensham this morning, compared to expectations, so maybe it was a little windy? Posted: 08 Apr 2006 I saw one in the morning at my site but as you mention about the wind, it was a tad fresh. I'm still learning about adders really so I wouldn't like to say for sure.
