Posted: 11 Mar 2007 Answer - it was here in East Devon. We had a cracking day. Mind you we are due a few after all the RAIN we get! Just shows weather/temp doesn't always count and as the saying goes - the first rule is, there are no rules! Suz |

Posted: 19 Mar 2007 Out this morning on Aylesbeare Common, East Devon. A sunny morning but bitter wind. Saw two male adders and 4 lizards - none together. A pond had strings of toad spawn and frog taddies now out the jelly. First chiff chaffs of the year heard and first Dartford Warbler seen. My son was trying out a new camera lens but neither adder was completely clear of grass stalks etc. so a bit frustrating. Suz |

Posted: 20 Mar 2007 Out on Aylesbeare Common again this morning/lunchtime. Again sunny but bitter wind. Saw two adders - one from yesterday - tightly curled tucked up under edge of heather. Saw over two dozen common lizards - they were everywhere. Suz |

Posted: 21 Mar 2007 Out surveying today after 3 days of gales, freezing temperatures and snow showers with the ground still solid with frost in many places. Quite a few adders out basking but mostly coiled & well down in the vegetation. The most active was a large male in one of the old bomb craters, but the steep side protected him from the wind and it was at 90 degrees to the angle of the sun to maximise the heat. Highlight of the day was walking round a small spur of higher ground and having a male hen harrier take off from behind a bracken bank right in front of me. No sign of any birders in the vicinity watching out for it, last time I saw them they were all parked up about 2 miles away peering over an upland fen. Posted: 22 Mar 2007 I wander round quite a few heaths that have adders. Have done for many years. I notice that there seems to be a pattern of more/larger ones on certain heaths with other heaths having less/smaller ones. I do realise the size difference in male/female. This is just observation, no measuring or weighing as I'm just an interested amateur. I had my observations agreed with by someone else who is out on the heaths a lot and looks at adders. Now I realise that this is in no way scientifically based but there is a bit of a punchline which I'll come to after I hear what others have to say. I'll come to it anyway if there are no comments! Can any conclusions be drawn? Suz |
