Posted: 31 Oct 2007 I think there is a bit of discussion on whether there are hot spots for black adders or are they a truly random thing. I too have seen lots of adders but on the one outing when my brother spotted a black one and filmed it (very blurry!) I had not accompanied him that day. We returned to the place many, many times but never saw it again. Suz |

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 Hehe , Keith, taking oneself to the brink of death is supposed to be good for the soul Do you feel enlightened? Tony, I was watching a documentry called Deadly Vipers on discovery yesterday and at the end the titles read "Thanks to Tony Phelps" , what was your part in this film. There were adders (melanistic ) out in the snow , various rattlesnakes , arietans and a few other bits. O-> O+> |

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 Thanks for letting me know it was the October issue Tony. Sorry I missed it. I only subscribe to British Wildlife and only pick up other mags when I hear of something interesting coming up. Suz |

Posted: 11 Nov 2007 Finally dug my October issue out, not much use realy narrows it down to the UK as a hotspot and mentions southern England. Anyone got any better info, I saw a mention of Dunwich / Minsmere as a good site for them.

Posted: 11 Nov 2007 Thanks for that Mark. I think I've put this before but here goes. Some years ago my mother and sister were holidaying on the Solway Firth at/near Kipford (yes?). They like to walk and before setting out along the coastal path the landlady warned them about the large number of adders there. They had not gone very far when they came upon a basking black adder. Posted: 11 Nov 2007 I replied to that question in a UK context, although I mentioned the black adders further north of their range. Also must be careful about specific UK sites, and it is true that they can pop up anywhere. 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |
