Posted: 19 Aug 2003 Is anyone familiar with a snake of the following description? I nearly stepped on it in a small grove of pines at Rausham in late July. Solid medium brown in color, one inch wide for most of its length, approximately 12 to 16 inches long, distinct head that is wider than its body, 2 yellow and white spots atop front of head (like eyes), serpentine locomotion. Any clues would help greatly. Thank you! -- Paige |

Posted: 19 Aug 2003 Sounds like a young grass snake. Have a look on the identification page and let us know if this was it (They range from browns, olive browns to green to occassionally almost black) http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/Grass%20Snake.htm Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |

Posted: 04 Sep 2003 Please pardon me. I orginally misspelled its name. Following is the correct name and location. Sincerely, Paige Rousham Park House and Garden -- Paige |

Posted: 08 Sep 2003 Hi Phuffman, The staff at Rousham Park report seeing 2 or 3 grass snakes each year, so they are found in the area. It is always possible that it was an escaped pet, identification of which would be difficult without photographic evidence. Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |
