I was wondering if anyone could help ID the following:

Location: Next to a Ditch in coniferous forest near ~Aberfoyle, Scotland. (Eggs were not in ditch and were probably above highest water level). The ditch was about 12" across and about 100-200ft up the side of a hill.

Appearance: Two individual clumps. The clumps looked like they were made up of abouut 5 completely black blackberries. There was no obvious "jelly" as with frogs eggs. Along with the eggs was an "icky Bit" a piece of bloody tissue about 3" long. A friend suggested it may be the remains of some form of egg sac.

There wre no other obvious clues in the area. There was large quantities of frog spawn in the ditch.

Hope you can help

Sounds like the insides of an unfortunate frog to me, Rosie.

I did think that, but a seemed a bit odd that there were no other remains in the vicinity - surely there are other bits that a predator would leave?

The other thing was that the eggs looked a lot larger than the black bits in normal fresh laid spawn.

I also found this as you can see in another thread i started http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1829 &PN=2   , i took pictures and e-mailed them to aberdeen university zoology department and they were identified as the ovaries of a frog or toad that were left by a predater i.e a heron or otter.
