Posted: 05 Jul 2004 I have recently become interested in snakes. I have spent so much time in the countryside over the years watching animals & birds but only recently realised that I have never seen a snake! Despite numerous visits to what I thought would be the most likely spots I have still never seen 1!!! I live in Moray in the North of Scotland, could anyone tell me the best way to go about observing snakes? Les |

Posted: 06 Jul 2004 Hi Les, The distribution of adder is patchy (this is the only snake species you would be likely to come across in Northern Scotland). The area of land either side of the Moray Firth seems to have very few recorded sightings, though the distribution appears better futher to the North and very good further to the South. You would know better than I but I would guess they are on the other side of some hills?? The best way to observe adder is in the early spring between mid to late February and March, when they are more approachable. At this time adder are sluggish and will be congregated around traditional hibernation sites. ----RAUK e-Forum---- ![]() |

Posted: 13 Jul 2004 Thanks for this. My brother remembers seeing quite a few adders when he was a child on the paths among the heather near where we lived. (quite high in the hills) I guess I will just have to hope I come across them. Regards Les Les |
