Hello, i recently got my first batch on frog spawn on Friday (well two batches) which is early for where i live (Northumberland). i was looking around the pond and looking under some stones i found 3 frogs, all about 6cm long, 1 of them was the common frog, all the right colourations etc however the other two had a primary of reddish instead of green. I was wondering if these are just a big colour difference from the others and are also common frogs, or are some other species ? :S never seen these before. I only managed about a 3 second look before they went into the water and didnt manage to get a picture, but mostly red with some green, not sure on the markings. Any ideas?

note: i have looked in all my books and on google images for any coloured frogs that resemble them but i cannot find any, mostly in google images there green or brown, the closest was a brownish red but still not red enough...

Common frog does vary in colour considerably in my experience. See this link http://oiseauxisere.free.fr/protection/ecrasement_amphibiens .htm to a french site with a pic of a red common frog (it does state that the colouration is unusual) but I have also seen red common frogs at my parents garden in Cheshire. If you get another look try to compare with the frogs on the ID pages - note markings etc, hope this helps...
