Hi all,

Amphibians are not my strong point, so sorry if I'm wrong.

But with this Snow and bellow freezing temperatures we are expecting, is this potentially very dangerous for frog spawn, or can it survive these sorts of conditions.

Thanks

James

Thanks Gemma

I don't know of any frog spawn locations its just the first thing that popped into my head when i heard of the weather that seems to all ready have arrived, so if any one does know of any locations maybe worth keeping an eye on their progress and posting in here so we can get an idea on whats still out there.

Thanks

James

Thats good to hear, by all accounts i hear a lot were killed due to the late frost last year.

Anyone else out there got any updates?

Further to this....I had around 4-6 clumps which as I said all hatched, but I checked the so named TADPOOL (seperate small pool which the frongs only lay in)  this weekend and numbers have dropped off a lot it seems.  I did move a few scoops into the main pond as I feared overcrowding but all the same the Taddie numbers have dropped.  I did catch a crafty newt in there (must have thought it was heaven) but not seen any in there since.  I still have great numbers, but nothing like I did have.

Thrushes and blackbirds drink from the same pool daily and I wondered if perhaps they snatched a lot from the shallows, very possible I think though I never saw them commit the crime.

thankfully my tadpoles have been doing well this year.
i have about 1000 of good size and back legs also made an appearance on many this week.
i bought a 250 litre preformed pond and instead of digging it into the ground i just placed it on my patio.
this has prevented birds/cats/foxes etc getting to them.
diet has been mainly spinach, ham and algae discs.
when they turn into froglets i will transfer them to my 8'*6'*1.5'* conventional pond.

it took mine 8 days from first back leg to first with four legs + tail
another week for the tail to resorb from what i remember from previous years
so in total about 15-20 days more

i had a great year this time around.
i take my spawn out of the pond and into a large tub in which i feed the tadpoles.
once they reach the 4 legs (with tail) stage i put them back in the 'mother' pond.
i keep a running count of how many i put back into the main pond.
this year i got 2287 from 5 clumps of spawn (last year was 49 from three clumps)
