Hi All,

Needing help as my daughter has rescued an injured slow worm from the garden yeaterday. It looks like it may have been injured by a strimmer or possibly a cat and has a nasty, deep but clean cut from 'ear to ear'.

I'm concerned it may not be able to eat, at least for a while. At the moment it is in a smallish plastic animal carrier - about 25cm x 15cm x 20 high with some grass and dandelion leaves at one end.

Question is what to do - how long can it survive without eating? Should we put some grass clippings / bark chips in?
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Mandy!
Well done for rescuing the little guy.
If the wound is fresh and open just give it a bit of a clean with some warm (not hot) steralised water on a cotton pad , the kind used for removing make-up.
Then the best thing to do is probably leave the slowy in the container in peace and see how he/she picks up.
Slow-worms will survive for quite some time without nosh so don't worry to much. If it does pick up then put a couple of white slugs in and see if it feeds.
Soil (Without Chemicals) and bark chips will be fine , also put something in there for it to hide under and just keep the container out of sunlight at room temp.
I wish you the best of luck, please let us know how things go

Mandy,
I tried to reply to your Pm regarding this, but the PM service is playing up.       The best bet is to follow Alans' advice - he knows more than I do regarding herp care(I don't keep any).   Hopefully the Slowwie will recover.

cheers, Mark
