Posted: 24 Mar 2005 I have a book written by a naturalist called gerald durrell, it has a small part about keeping tadpoles and experiments with them, one of the experiments is to add a few drops of iodine to the water tank or whatever you use to keep them in it apparently speeds up growth, is this true? Posted: 19 Jun 2006 As I understand it, adding iodine speeds up metamorphosis, rather than growth. So adding iodine would probably make the tadpoles leave the water at a smaller size. This is because the hormone thyroxine, which is involved in metamorphosis, contains iodine. Increased iodine in the diet apparently increases production of thyroxine. I wouldn't recommend it for producing healthy froglets, though... |
