Posted: 30 Apr 2005 I was very pleased when I found two slow-worms in our garden, i've never seen any before and have been looking ever since we move here in June last year as the previous occupants did say we had slow-worms living in the garden
Last photo is not very good but it is of the juvenile Ruth |

Posted: 01 May 2005 Good pictures Ruth. If you are keen to encourage the slow worms you might consider building a compost heap and keeping it as a home for them. I have one with corrugated iron sides and keep it covered with thick black plastic (weighted down round the edges). Inside there is a depth of about 2ft of compost material round the edges humping up to about 3ft in the middle. I top this up occasionally but try not to disturb it too often. I think they hibernate in there. When I look under the plastic from March onwards there are up to a dozen slow worms basking. Later in the year the tiny babies appear. The slow worms also like the dalek type compost bins and lie on the top of the compost under the lid.
