John,

Bound to be plenty out there. I'd suggest just wander and look in likely places, take as many pics as you can, and do the detective work for ID when back. It can be quite difficult, going to places with a 'shopping list' of what to see .

If you're set on doing some homework before, try Jeroen's site for some clues: http://intramar.ugent.be/nemys/aspmap/nemys/default.asp?grou p=16#

sorry to correct you, Steve; the better url should be http://intramar.ugent.be/nemys/start.asp?group=16 but as Kusadasi is in the Asian part of Turkey, I am afraid it won't help much.

I myself was there in June 2003 but I only had 1 day of a little bit herp-hunting. Near the Artemision, I found Pelophylax (formerly Rana) bedriagae, Natrix natrix persa, Mauremys rivulata, Lacerta trilineata and some kind of newt larvae (but there's shouldn't be no newts, looking at distribution maps ...). At the archeological site of Ephesus: Testudo (graeca) ibera, Pseudepidalea (formerly Bufo) viridis, and Euprepis (formerly Mabuya) auratus. At Dilek NP: "Lacerta" anatolica aegeae and Laudakia stellio + a shed skin of Eirenis modestus. June was certainly too late to find many species.

Sorry for the Latin names =>

Natrix natrix is Grass Snake; the others are Levant Water Frog, Balkan Terrapin, Balkan Green Lizard, Spur-thighed Tortoise, Green Toad, Golden Skink, Anatolian Lizard, Starred Agama, Masked Dwarf Snake

Montivipera xanthina = Ottoman Viper; used to be very common around there but has been collected a lot ...
