L trilineata near Istanbul?: |

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 Hi all ive just returned from a quick work trip to Istanbul. I saw plenty of Podarcis siculus (hieroglyphicus) and was also told of a giant green lizard that occurs there. Does anyone know which species this is (presumeably a L trilineata subspecies of some kind). Cheers Rob |

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 Dear Rob, I have not had any first hand experience of Istanbul and am not even that sure if it is on both sides of the Bosporus. I have checked Demirsoy 1997 and Baran & Atatur 1997 and found that Lacerta viridis meridionalis is found on both sides whereas Lacerta trilineata dobrogica is only found in Turkish Thrace on the European side of the Bosporus. The other subspecies do not come anywhere near close to the coast by the maps. David British Herpetological Society Librarian and member of B.H.S Conservation Committee. Posted: 05 Sep 2009 Thanks for the reply David I was told by a local biologist/ ornithologist that he had seen lizards to nearly 50cm total length, and this to me sounds like a trilineata ssp. I asked him to collect some for me for photographing but as yet am still waiting. He also said he has pics of them already, I await his email copies of these. Incientally we were based on the european side. Rob |
