Lots of toads around here, around july/august I was seeing at least 1 every night.

these photos had me lying on the wet stony drive trying to use car headlights to focus with. ended up resorting to AF. but only the once...

(1p piece for size comparison) rescued these from the sandpit, but brought them in for a few decent shots first.

Interesting pictures.   Any ponds near to you?

there's a couple lakes within a miles radius (fishing ones though.)

I have a pond, however its not very accessible for frogs/toads/newts as its based in a 1/2 whiskey barrel.

I am planning a bog garden/pond area, but that's still got to happen,

there also is a stream about 200 meters down the road.

there are also lots of trenches in the garden. as it's still somewhat of a building site, and the ground retains water very well, so there is usually a decent depth of water near the foundations of the garage

Fishing lakes can be very good for toads- I know of a couple that have very large toad populations. Might be worth visiting them on a spring night to have a look for breeding toads...

Caleb,

Why is that?  Are Bb tadpoles less palateable or distasteful to some fish than Rt tadpoles?    Your statement about fishing lakes is certainly the case locally to me.  The tadpoles were chiefly in the shallows however.  There are some large carp in the lakes that I am thinking of.  There are also palmate newts but Rt tadpoles are confined to the smaller pools and ditches around here.

Yes, toad tadpoles are generally more distasteful than frog tadpoles (though some fish will take them). Toads generally prefer large waterbodies, and there aren't that many large ponds or lakes that aren't used for fishing...

Great pics!
I wanted presents from lots of you. Snot fair that Ben Rigsby was the only one to send me Xmas & birthday presents.
