Hi

I'm new to this forum and am looking for some adder advice.  I've seen a few adders in my time, mostly by accident whilst out walking and I want to start learning more about them.

Where do I start when trying to learn more about adders?

Are there any good publications out there?

Clubs?

Meetings?

Experienced herps that are willing to offer advice to a novice?

Thanks in advance.

P.S Great forum!  Love the photos you have uploaded.

Where abouts in the UK are you ? - there may well be a local or County ARG group nearby.

There is a good little book on Adders by Peter Stafford 1987 The Adder   Shire Natural History.
If you register on the Euroherp Database which is in the links section on the left hand column of this forum you can download literature if you go to the page on

Vipera berus Prestt, I 1971 is a very good paper but there are a lot there that give different information. There are various Herpetological societies around the country some more keeping orientated than others but most have a mixture of talks where someone may come along and talk about Adders, not sure where you are in the U.K. I think I am correct in saying that the British Herpetological Society and the South Western Herpetological Society are the only societies that still have libraries where you can borrow books and papers and should have information on all the British species.

Thanks for the information.

I've joined the BHS.

Registered with the Euroherp Database.

Ordered my copy of 'The Adder'

Charged the battery in my camera.

I'm now waiting for the rain to stop and the weather to warm up.
