Hi Everyone!
I recently bought a pond after digging up a hibernating toad in the
garden of my new house. I put a pond in almost immediately with the
prospect wildlife in the garden.
I filled the pond with a selection of oxygenating plants, deep water plants
and marginals. Within a week I had a pair of toads mating and a single
newt.
They have since spawned and I now have thousands of small tadpoles.
I have discovered this evening that I now have a pair of newts, the second
one I have spotted could be a male as it has a crest down its dorsal, but is
not a greater crested.
I am thrilled by amount of success I have generated in such a small
amount of time with my pond.
In order to achieve maximum, success is there anything I can do to
ensure as many survive as possible, although I don't want to upset the
balance of nature, will my pond have enough food for the amount of life
it contains?
Do you have any advice for me?
Also I removed a laburnham from nearby the pond as they can be
poisonous, is there any other plants which should not be planted? I
planted a huge section of crocosmia next to the pond to provide shelter,
are these safe?
It seems that Central Northampton is a hotbed of Amphibian life!

You've been very lucky with such a new pond.

I have seen a blackbird munching up my tadpoles and I believe robins like them as well! If you have thousands it might not matter to you to lose a few.

I am feeding my tadpoles on slugs and snails which they seem to love.

Yes, its year on now and there is much more activity.
I'll take some pics at the weekend and post them.
I seem to have everything now, mating balls of frogs, newts and Toads!
