Posted: 03 Feb 2006 Had this sent through to me yesterday. Whats everyone's opinion on the ID of these newts? IÆve got my suspicions but would like a second opinion. I realise the photo doesnÆt give much to go on, sorry. Guess this also links to the 2006 coming to life thread. These were seen close to river chess in Herts. Would have been taken no more than two days ago. Incidentally I have seen newts in drainage structures quite often. Usually quite emaciated. Suppose they get washed down and cant get out.

Posted: 06 Feb 2006 Slim chance that the big dark one's a crested. It does look quite chunky, wide head, fat tail, darker than the others, and twice their size... |

Posted: 06 Feb 2006 Difficult without anything to scale it with, but my initial thought was adult smooth and juveniles. Rhys, did you reduce the image to meet the forum size limit? Hi Rhys, couldn't do much with the image, but enough to convince me that it is a small newt species and gut feeling says smooth newt as JC originally thought.
