Posted: 21 Feb 2007 I have just fished out a female newt from my small pond. On examining her closely, there were no spots in evidence on throat or underside. We have only ever had smooths up to now. Is it possible a palmate has moved in or are these markings just not sufficiently conclusive? All the best Neil |

Posted: 22 Feb 2007 It's extremely rare (but not unknown) for an adult female smooth to have no spotting at all on the belly. Young smooths of both sexes always have no spotting on the belly, though. So if your newt is adult size, it's most likely to be a palmate. Keep looking out for males, though, there'll be no doubt then. |

Posted: 22 Feb 2007 Take a close photo of the underside of the hind feet and post it on here I will be able to tell you whether it is a palmate or not Regards
