These snakes were observed in south-east Poland. We have 4 species of snakes, and only adder is venomous species.

love the photos. amazing how much colour and pattern variation there can be between different snakes of the same species.

Good stuff, love the variety. Do you have notes on colour change over a period of time? Keep us informed of your records, very interesting.
Thanks

I'm working on it. In adult vipers so far I have seen small changes in colouration in one female, shes zigzag becames brighter, 2 years ago she had more brown pattern, this is she (photo made this year, I don't have pic how she looked before)

Another example, male:
photo made in 2007

and photo made one year later, in 2008:

I don't see differences.

there are differences between juveniles and adults, especially in colouration, but now I don't have particular data about it.

I have just had photos of colour change i.e. graduating to melanism from Daniel Bohle in Germany - interesting stuff.

Normal snake gradually become black? I've heard that almost all melanistic adders had normal colouration when they were juveniles, but there are no melanistic individuals in my population so I couldn't check it (have to look into other population).

Could be, I come across this fairly regularly in both adder and grass snakes.

Sometmies if the spectacle doesn't come away during the shed it can become infected. Most seem to cope with it, in a couple of incidences it has been possible to carefully remove the unshed spectacle for them after checking that the eye itself was still intact, at lot depends on how long it has been going on for.

It could also be an old injury, hard to tell.

It looks to me that for this one there would be little one could do for it as the eye socket looks swollen as does the surrounding soft tissue, so it is very likely that it has already lost the eye and there is quite a bad infection , it will just have to cope with the one good eye if it can survive, many do cope just fine and can be seen season after season.
