Posted: 07 Apr 2007 We had a very good morning. I will start off the reports with some pictures of the herpetologists present on site! I'll post some pictures of a Sand Lizard eating a spider on another thread. Peter Vaughan |

Posted: 07 Apr 2007 I had a great day and it was interesting to finally put faces to names. The trip was a little unusual, I think, in not turning up huge numbers of some of the commoner species: no Grass Snakes and only 3 maybe 4 Adders spotted all day, but producing many Sand Lizards and finally, at Hankley, a Smooth Snake. Some of us also went to Crooksbury Common where Sand Lizards appeared to be thicker on the grounds than Common Lizards. I have started a thread with a couple of pics on the Smooth Snake forum and I hope to get some Sand Lizard pics online soon. Thanks to everyone who shared their time, experience and enthusiasm. |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 A piccy for Suzi This chap was our early 'star' of the show, allowing some good photo opportunites. Eventually Jon caught him for weights and measures.
Al, I'll own up to being second from the right front row, I'll have to have a word with Peter for breaking the unwritten law of the forum - no pictures of the admin Perhaps the other suspects can name and shame themselves too. Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 It was a great day and nice to meet everyone. Great pics taken from the day. I was one of the lucky few who went on to Crooksbury and Hankley Commons, which are also local to me (not rubbing it in honestly!). BTW I'm the third from the left in the front row. So when and where will the next field trip be Gemma? Danial Consultant Ecologist and Amphibians Officer of Surrey Amphibian and Reptile Group www.surrey-arg.org.uk |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 There were some ideas put forward Danial, including the next one being on David Bird's patch so a few of us could meet up with him. (If he wants to meet us that is I suppose I should have asked him first) Perhaps it would be best to start a new thread for the next trip so a few more ideas can be forward or to see if we have enough support for a particular site/area. Posted: 08 Apr 2007 Lovely pic Gemma, thanks! I was out today on a general walk but did cross a very small relict heath ( which was part of a huger expanse ploughed up for WW2 food effort and never reinstated) and saw lots of common lizards but nothing else. Adders would have warmed up and moved off as it was afternoon. I have pasted the photo of you guys into Word and added labels so I know who some of you are. Herping still looks a bit of a male interest from the pic - only Gemma keeping our side up. Twas too far for me to come but I would try for Studland if anyone fancies that in future. Suz |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 Studland would be a good one Suzi, I would love to go as I've never been there (6 species anyone? ), I'll start a new thread for the next trip and put that up as the first suggestion so we can all find it.

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 Well done all - wish I could have joined you - maybe next April with Johannes as well Studland is a good choice for six species; Hartland also would turn up trumps, but David will have his own thoughts on sites. 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 Belated thanks to Jon for taking the first group photo. Rob Vaughan (not the one who regularly posts to the forum!), with the blond hair is fourth from the right. The chap fourth from the left, with the even "blonder" hair is me! Rob took the second photo, in which Jon is centre stage. I think Hartland would be a great choice. I was there this morning for a brief visit between 10am and 11am. No snakes out basking but plenty of Common Lizards on display together with a bright green male Sand Lizard. And I found a Sand Lizard shed skin. Peter Vaughan |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 I'll just post the link to the new thread for trip #2 http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2041 &PN=1 as we are in danger of having two threads on the subject, which might get confusing. Tony/Peter, I'll add Hartland to the other thread. Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |

Posted: 08 Apr 2007 It certainly was a good day, it was nice meeting up with like-minded people. 4 species within 10 minutes... what can I say? I am crap with remembering names so putting names to faces on the picture does help me a lot! I saw one site which I'll be returning to. Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |
