I have asked this question before. Does anyone have record of adder preying on sand lizard?? I have never witnessed this, but I cannot believe it does not happen. Particularly neos feeding on young lizards. I ask again because am going over this part of my adder book. The only clue I have is a photo of an adder eating a sand lizard from Poland.

Hi Tony,

I've never seen it, but also cannot believe that juveniles are not predated.

Beware of that Polish photo, as another photo by the same photographer of a grass snake eating a frog has a very similar setting and similar lighting. I suspect that they are vivaria shots, and a hungry adder would probably eat anything put into the same tank, that it could overpower and swallow.

Thanks for that info Steve; I think it is best to discount it then.
Unless someone else has any records???

The only animal I have seen an Adder eating in the wild was an adult Slow-worm. I know a Grass Snake from Corfe Mullen regurgitated a Sand Lizard but not exactly what you wanted.

No, but interesting record all the same, thanks Dave.

Just have to be careful how I state this possibilty in the book, Its easy to make assumptions but I hate to use words like 'probably' or 'most likely'.

Hi Tony,

I have seen an image of an Adder feeding on a Sand lizard. I believe it was in Arkive imagery. I cannot recall the photographer, but have a nose anyways.
