Should gfrogs still be active in November: |

Posted: 25 Nov 2006 I popped into the garden today to clear fallen leaves from the main pond and the small spawning pool, despite netting plenty get thorugh. To subtle shock i was met in the spawn pool by four frogs!! I thought these guys should be pretty innactive by now? One looks distinctly fat (carrying spawn? surley not) they were all very active and one doen I returned them to the garden. Is this normal? I also found three palmates under a very shallw layer of leaves, these guys were very dosile but not really hiding well enough to avoid the frost. Again i built them a proper refuge and left them to it. Posted: 25 Nov 2006 Martin you might have seen my comments on another thread about currently active frogs. I am still seeing frogs in my pond as I walk past and there is possibly a toad as well but that dives off before I spot it usually. We are now in a mild spell after a week of hard frosts about 3 or 4 weeks ago. What interests me is if they are still about now it's not long here (East Devon) until spawning time. Valentines Day is a bit of an average date for spawning so allowing time for pairing etc it might only mean about 8 weeks hibernation, that is if they go to ground now. What I wonder is do these frogs gain from still feeding or lose out by not hibernating and conserving stored energy. Or is there no gain in hibernating if you manage to find food well into winter. Posted: 26 Nov 2006 Just a note about the palmate newts. I've observed them a number of times hibernating in leaf litter at a depth that barely seems plausible in terms of frost protection - it seems to be a normal choice though. Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |

Posted: 19 Dec 2006 My frogs/toads are still active in my pond. I'm not seeing more than the odd one at once since autumn whereas in summer I could see 6 or 8 at once. Not sure if it is always the same frog/toad I see now or different ones. Suz |
