Gang, Today is a very black day for herpetologists with the sad loss of Steve Irwin. For me, one of the programmes I'll always remember was his encounter with a brown snake in his garage that got into the engine bay of his landrover. Terrific stuff with a great ending. Steve, if you're up there, thanks mate, 'you were ripper'. Rob RobV |

Posted: 04 Sep 2006 What an aweful sad day, i'm absolutely mortified. Love him or loathe him (I loved him) , he did more to make Joe Public warm to herps than any other herpetologist. O-> O+> |

Posted: 04 Sep 2006 All of the above, plus he changed the way natural history programmes were presented. He took it up a level and opened the door for Mark O'Shea, Austin Stevens and Co. An original. I'll be opening a tinny for you tonight mate. Deano. Deano Better to be lucky than good looking. |

Posted: 04 Sep 2006 I worked on several of his programmes. He was charismatic and knowledgeable; a good communicator. He will be missed. But, he died with his 'boots' on. The way I, (and others) have thought I would go. Good on ya mate 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

Yeah I feel the same - he will be missed just makes you wonder what he was doing to make the ray sting him as sting rays like adders ar enot aggressive and only use their sting for defence - perhaps he was swimming in just his khaki shorts and shirt while hugging the ray on the bottom of the sea bed - he was a little crazy at times - I remember him swimming after alligators in the everglades - wonderful television - shame about the zoo though and the dangle yer baby in front of the croc incident - still that was just for the publicity - I suppose we wont see another presenter like him - JC

Posted: 05 Sep 2006 I was feeding the same species of Ray in the Maldives a couple of weeks ago on the beach. At 5 oclock each evening they glide up onto the beach on a wave, wings flapping away and beach themselves, you can then stroke them, feed them with raw fish or whatever and they then go back in the sea on the next wave. There were quite a few brave souls, me included ,who went into the water to feed them. They are such graceful, beautiful, peaceful animals that I can,t imagine it being anything other than a tragic accident, but such a shock to us all ,what a waste. Posted: 16 Sep 2006 A mighty loss. Steve Irwin was not only a passionate communicator of natural history, but also an ardent campaigner for the conservation of species and their habitats. There are some people's boots that just cannot be filled, Steve Irwin was one of them. RIP Steve |

Posted: 07 Oct 2006 I heard this horrible news from my sister, I live in France and so my sister told me to get to my english tv, I didn't know what to say, I was so upset, gutted and a little angry at the same time, I am going to miss him, I have only just got to this thread and now thinking deeply about Steve, I feel the need to cry, I loved him, he is the reason why I am who I am today, I would have never touched a scorpion, snake, lizard, toad without seeing him catch them himself. When I got home from school I sent an email to Sky News, a text to say rest inpeace and thanks, I got a phone call and they interviewed me live at 9 o'clock, because well this guy made me who I am today, well Sky News thought that it was great to feel so close to someone I'd never even met. But watching him on TV was almost like meeting him, when he is wispering to you in the jungle, pointing out a snake next to the river, you just can't help but feel like you are sharing his space and you feel honored. My dream was to meet him, that will never happen now... RIP Steve Irwin Reptiles & Amphibians of France: www.herpfrance.com European Field Herping Community: www.euroherp.com |
