Posted: 26 Oct 2003 Hi all, got back this morning from South Africa. This must be a record for me. I went to Pretoria Zoo to take some pix of various snakes. One of these was Proatheris superciliaris, also known as the swamp viper. I took some nice shots with the film camera then thought will try some with my new coolpix. I pointed the camera at the snake, but was concentraing too much on the screen and I got nailed on the finger. I had only been in the country for less than three hours. One fang penetrated my right finger next to the pinkie and it bled profusely; but no pain, no burning, not tingling even. There is no antiserum for this species; then the guy with me said someone who had been bitten by this species had difficulty breathing six hours later. So I was sat down for six hours with a phone call to the local A&E for standby. Nothing, absolutely nothing, dry bite, lucky me, but what a start. Had a great time with gaboons particularly on the frontal dunes of the coastal forest at St Lucia, got some great shots wish I knew how to post them, I have managed to downlaod them though. Also, good times with black mamba, forest cobra, and puffies. Tony |

Posted: 29 Dec 2004 I took my first hit yesterday from a 7ft carpet, God it hurt, the sod chewed on my forearm needless to say it bled....a lot! I was just wondering if I need some shot or other? I can't imagine the pain of taking a hit from a hot! Glad you were ok. Ross |
