Hi all

recently on a site in Dorking Surrey, a large male slowworm was collected within a rescue operation. the snout vent length (SVL) of this animal was 246mm or 24.6cm - Nick Smith from Southampton University at the ARG UK South Regional meeting mentioned that this was probably the biggest slowworm he has ever seen!

Now I know what ya thinking - has anyone else found similar sized slowworms? - it is the snout to vent length not total length -

the animal's tail had been lost and measured 80mm so full or total length was 326mm or 32.6cm - just imagine how long this fella would be with a full healthy tail! A photo will be posted soon

Regards

Jon

The largest slow worms I have ever recorded; and we sent one to Nick Arnold at the BNHM was on Steep Holm in the Bristol Channel. The largest was a male svl 285mm; but it was the actual girth of the animals that was impressive, thick as a man's thumb at least. Most had regen or short tails due to the fact that they lived in the middle of a large herring gull colony.

Didn't measure this one but she's about the biggest I've seen, from inner city Cardiff. I have bigger than average hands btw.
