Posted: 26 Oct 2008 Hi all, whilst surfing the web the other day I came across this from a site in the US. They are using Google Earth to pinpoint locations and send attachments to each other - do you think this could be done here? For the info please read the following: - http://www.forums.repashy.com/showthread.php?t=6692 (sorry can't get the hyperlink to work) David Hind Wildlife Trust (Cumbria) - Member Solway AONB - Volunteer |

Posted: 27 Oct 2008 Hi Dave, We've got a similar system, not using Google Earth, but Microsoft Virtual Earth. On the sightings report page, instead of a GPS reference you can right click on the interactive map, which returns the grid reference into the sightings form. The records are displayed using the same technology, and are available to land-managers to help with the site management plan. Should have added...we do use .KMLs for polygons, such as range of animals and survey areas, but for point records (as above) I use the GeoRSS XML schema. This keeps data and presentation separate, and is (and will be) more interoperable. Distribution files are created using text parsing from the main database. Theoretically they could be sent as attachments, but as the schema has limited standard fields, some of the contextual information may be lost. Anyway, you could count the number of organisations capable of handling data in that way on the fingers of a mitten. Good old spreadsheet cuts are still the most reliable way of shunting data about.
